 May/June Calendar

I look forward to seeing all the Moms at our Mother’s Day Tea on Thursday, May 10th from 10:30 to 11:30 (unless you’re the helper that day).  Your children are working hard to make this a very special and memorable day.   They have been involved in the planning, decorations, invitations, present making and this month, as it gets closer, they will be baking the muffins we will enjoy at the tea.  I hope you are all as excited about this day as the children are!

During the last few weeks, we will talk about the special guys in our lives, bugs and the circus.  We hope that Dad or another special guy can join us on May 24th at 10:45am.  Please let me know who will be coming that day. At the end of the month, we’ll be talking about the circus to prepare for our very own circus which is scheduled for Tuesday, June 5th.

Tuesday, May 1st —  The preparation continues for the Mother’s Day Tea.  Today, we learn how to spell ‘MOM’ and talk more about flowers.  We’ll read a fun story called Is Your Mama a Llama? By Deborah Guarino

Thursday, May 3rd— Today, we read a funny story called Mommy Doesn’t Know My Name, by Suzanne Williams, wherein the little girl is called “honey, pumpkin, etc…” by her Mom.  We’ll be asking the children if there is a special name that you call them.  We’ll finish up a project or two for next Thursday.

Tuesday, May 8th—Since our tea theme involves strawberries, it is only fitting that we have strawberry plants.  We’ll re-pot them today in something a little more festive.  We’ll also be baking the muffins we’ll enjoy at the tea.  After all this hard work, we’ll relax and watch a short video of “Is Your Mama a Llama?”

Thursday, May 10th —  The day is finally here — our Mother’s Day Tea!
Mom’s should come to our sand and water room at 10:30, wearing a hat (with flowers if you have one— but any hat will do!)  You will sit, relax and be served by the children.  Be sure to bring your cameras!  We’ll read You’re My I Love You by Maryann K. Cusimano and Satomi Ichikawa.

Tuesday, May 15th— We now turn our attention to bugs.  We’ll talk about caterpillars and butterflies today.  We’ll create our own caterpillar which we will wrap in cocoons or chrysalis’. (They will magically turn into butterflies on Thursday!)  We’ll read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  Each spring, the school buys caterpillars and we have been watching them change each class day.  Hopefully, we’ll be lucky enough to see a butterfly emerge from their chrysalis!  We’ll paint our rocks red so they will be ready for Thursday.

HOMEWORK FOR THURSDAY, MAY 17TH
Bring a bug (real or plastic) to school on Thursday (don’t forget to poke small air holes!)

Thursday, May 17th—Bring a Bug to School Day (Real or Plastic)—Happy Birthday Lauren!!!
We’ll take out our magnifying glasses to get a closer look at all the bugs.  We’ll ask the children to tell us about their bug — color, big/small, etc…  Our red rocks will turn into a ladybug paperweight by adding eyes, dots and some antennae.  We’ll read Ten Little Ladybugs by Melanie Gerth and Laura Huliska-Beith.  Then, we’ll count up to twelve when we sing “The Ladybug Picnic” song from Sesame Street.  We’ll create snacks that look like bugs but taste a bit better!

Tuesday, May 22nd— Today, we talk about “FUDGE” — which means Friends, Uncles, Dads, Grandpas and Every other special guy in our lives.  We’ll make some surprises for that special guy and get ready for FUDGE Day on Thursday.  We’ll read Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle.  To help the children get ready for next year, we’ll visit a FOURS classroom today where they can play with the “bigger kid’s” toys.

The circus is coming to PNS and we have to get ready for yet another fun-filled and memorable event!  Some of the children have been to a live circus, others have seen one on television and others may have not seen a circus at all.   They will choose parts to play in the circus (ringmaster, clown, tight rope walker, lion tamer, etc….)  To ensure they all understand the “parts, we’ll watch a short video about the Barnum and Bailey Circus.  Information comes home today about our circus.  We’ll ask you to talk to your child about the roles and let us know what they have chosen by next Tuesday, May 29th.

Thursday, May 24th—FUDGE DAY—Happy Birthday Jacob H.!!!—We’ll be  making a special snack to share with our special guys.  We’ll read I’m A Duck by Teri Sloat.   Dad’s and/or other special guys are invited to join us at 10:45am.   We’ll sing some songs, give out our presents and, of course, EAT!!!

Tuesday, May 29th—Happy Birthday Ava!  —We’ll begin a circus clown project.  The circus animals visit our class today and we’ll get to play with them during free play.  We’ll read  Circus Surprise by Sue Harris.  We’ll also look at circus flip book and learn a circus song.  We’ll also get to play with a variety of circus toys and puzzles. We’ll also create a lion with a handprint mane!

Thursday, May 31st—Happy Birthday Christopher! —We’ll finish our circus clowns today.  The animals will be back, along with all the circus toys and puzzles.     To prepare for the big show next week, we’ll rehearse our circus in the Muscle Room today.  We have one last day to play with all the circus toys.  We’ll make our Circus Treat Bags today.  We’ll read Clifford Goes to the Circus by Norman Bridwell.

Note: Tuesday’s class begins at 9:30 am and ends at 11:30 am.

Tuesday, June 5th— Circus Day — Happy Birthday Ashley and Katelyn!!! —Children report to school at 9:30 am today to give us enough time to set up.  A special schedule will be sent home.  Briefly, we start our day with the circus performance which ALL parents, siblings, grandparents, etc. are invited to join in the fun as our audience.  After the show is over, only the helping parents that day remain and we’ll play a wide variety of carnival games.

Thursday, June 7th—This is a regular day from 9:00 to 11:30am in our regular classrooms.  Today, a magician comes to our school to perform.  The Magic Show is approximately 30 minutes.  We hope the children will really enjoy this show!

Tuesday, June 12th —Our Last Day— We’ll have a luau today.  The children will make leis and spend the last day playing with their favorites.  We invite all our families to join us at 10:30 am to enjoy the last day with us.  We’ll enjoy some finger foods, play and give out the famous Big Books which will be a lasting memory of all the wonderful days we had this year!

I want to thank each and everyone of you for all your help this year.  You have all been such good sports — doing whatever I asked you to do with incredible grace and humor.  I appreciate that more than I can say.  None of this is  possible without you!   Most of all I want to thank you for sharing your amazing children with me!

HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER!!!
Love, Mrs. Harrison
